Will Tropical Storm Imelda turn into a hurricane? What to know about the path of the storm

Must read

Tropical storm Imelda in the Bahamas could become a hurricane, but meteorologists say Hurricane Humberto will help keep that storm out to sea, sparing any potential landfall.

A large dome of high pressure over the Northeast will prevent Humberto and Imelda from making landfall in the region, according to Wicked Local media partner WCVB Channel 5.

“The storm’s proximity to the east coast of Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas will cause heavy rainfall in some areas with a potential for flash flooding,” AccuWeather senior meteorologist Renee Duff said in a written statement. “Rain totaling 4-8 inches can fall from just north of Charleston, South Carolina, to Wilmington, North Carolina.”

Will Massachusetts and the rest of New England see any effects from either storm in the Atlantic Basin?

Here’s what to know.

About the current developing storm?

According to an AccuWeather release, “Hurricane Humberto is expected to tug…(Imelda) out to sea and away from the Southeast early this week, reducing the tropical rain and wind impacts in the United States.”

In a written statement, Duff added, “The size and strength of Hurricane Humberto will exert more influence on this developing storm and cause it to be pulled out to sea and away from the East Coast.”

She added that rough ocean surf, rip currents, beach erosion and coastal flooding created by both storms will remain a concern in Massachusetts and the rest of the New England region.

“Surf will be increasing Tuesday with the peak of the high surf and dangerous rip currents on Wednesday,” according to the National Weather Service’s online forecaster’s discussion. “High surf will linger into Thursday but will be gradually diminishing.”

AccuWeather stated that Imelda “may intensify into a hurricane off the Southeast U.S. coast early this week.”

What’s the status of Hurricane Humberto?

AccuWeather noted in a release that Humberto strengthened into a huge Category 5 hurricane over the weekend in the Atlantic, becoming the second storm to reach Category 5 strength this season.

“Humberto is forecast to pass between Bermuda and the U.S. East Coast early this week, bringing gusty winds and rain to the islands between Tuesday and Wednesday,” according to the release.

Those rains are expected to affect Bermuda from Wednesday into Thursday.
