A man charged in connection with the death of his father appeared in New Hanover County District Court on Monday, July 7.
Camden White, 19, of Wilmington, appeared in court on Monday afternoon. His bond was set at $500,000. Upon posting bond, he will be placed on house arrest and subjected to frequent drug screenings.
White has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of his father, Michael White. The victim died from an apparent gunshot wound on July 5, according to a news release from the Wilmington Police Department.
Camden White was arrested on July 3 in connection with charges of attempted common law robbery and impeding traffic on May 24, according to court records. White was also charged with injury to personal property in connection with an incident on May 28. He was released on July 3 after posting a $10,000 bond related to the prior arrest, according to court records.
A district attorney requested that White not be granted a bond. The attorney said that White exhibited a pattern of dangerous behavior, noting the theft charges stemming from an incident where numerous businesses and vehicles were broken into.
The district attorney said that White was hallucinating under impairing substances at the time of the incident. The attorney said that he is believed to have been under the influence of the same substances at the time of the alleged shooting death.
White’s defending attorney said that he was under the effects of lysergic acid diethylamide, commonly known as LSD, at the time of both incidents. The defending attorney said that the LSD was provided by the defendant’s father. White was hospitalized for 12-18 hours following the theft incident, his attorney said.
Several family members, including White’s mother, attended the appearance in support. The family was not available for comment following the hearing.
White is scheduled to appear in court on July 24.
The Wilmington Police Department responded to the 200 block of Colonial Drive following reports of gunshots inside a nearby residence around 12:30 a.m. on July 5, according to an earlier news release.
Officers cleared the home and located Michael White upstairs, dead from an apparent gunshot wound, the release stated. Officers located the suspect and detained him.
