New Yorkers are settling into homes in upstate New York rather than visiting for a weekend or seasonal getaway. A purposeful move is afoot, toward cleaner air, smaller communities and a far more affordable cost of living when considering a lifestyle in large metropolitan areas like New York City.
Here’s more about 10 Finger Lakes towns that offer an appealing mix of serenity and stimulation, according to the World Atlas.
Newark NY

Located in southern Wayne County, Newark is a small village on the Erie Canal. The town boasts a walkable downtown with local diners, eateries and shops, along with seasonal offerings like a farmers markets, Canal Day festivals and summer concerts in the park. The Canalway trail is a popular spot for cyclist and walkers. Housing prices are well below the national average, with many options under $200,000, making it an ideal place for retirees on a fixed income seeking value. And “with close access to larger cities like Rochester, approximately 35 miles west, Newark offers affordable living and essential services, providing comfort without the chaos of big-city life,” according to the World Atlas.
Ovid NY

This small Seneca County town is nestled between Seneca and Cayuga lakes – New York’s two largest Finger Lakes. The town is known for its natural beauty and offers a slower pace of life. Ovid is near several state parks, including Sampson State Park, located on the eastern shore of Seneca Lake. You can also hike nearby in the Finger Lakes National Forest, which provides miles of hiking trails. Considering its proximity to several lakes, Ovid is ideal for those who enjoy water activities like boating, fishing or swimming. Farms, orchards and wineries surround the village, centrally located within a town by the same name.
Aurora NY

Established in 1795, Aurora is a small village (of roughly 735 people) on the eastern shore of Cayuga Lake. The Cayuga County community has a rich culture and landmarks, including the notable Aurora Inn. The village is home to Wells College, which for years was a women-only liberal arts college and closed earlier this year. Also known as Aurora-on-Cayuga, the village is filled with lakeside inns and estates, eateries and shops. Visitors can also enjoy lakeside recreations and water sports on Cayuga Lake. According to the World Atlas, Aurora is affordable compared to other cities, with options ranging from charming cottages and historic homes to lakefront properties that fit within various budgets. Property taxes are also relatively low, contributing to a more affordable lifestyle.
Dundee NY

Located in Yates County and between Seneca and Keuka Lakes, Dundee is known for its peaceful rural setting and close-knit community, according to the World Atlas. It’s a great option for retirees seeking a quiet, rural lifestyle with nearby attractions, scenic beauty and a low cost of living. Dundee provides a slow and steady pace with wide-open spaces, single-family properties and farmland. Many wineries are located nearby including Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard and Glenora Wine Cellars, both in Dundee.
Fairport NY
A lively village within the town of Perinton, Fairport is located along the Erie Canal in eastern Monroe County. The walkable canal-front community is ideal for retirees who want scenic charm and the convenience of nearby urban amenities as Rochester is just a 20 minute drive. Fairport’s centerpiece is a unique 111-year-old lift bridge that spans the Erie Canal. The area surrounding the waterway is bustling – with eateries, coffee shops and boutiques. The village also hosts popular special events such as Fairport Canal Days, which is held in the village each June. The village also has a weekly seasonal farmer’s market.
Saratoga Springs NY
Known primarily due to extensive interest in horse racing, namely the Saratoga Racing Hall of Fame, the town of Saratoga Springs also boasts cultural depth, including the popular Saratoga Performing Arts Center. Broadway Street, which forms the town’s core, is bustling and lined with unique boutiques, cozy cafes and art galleries. Saratoga Springs also has natural mineral springs, which have attracted visitors seeking wellness for centuries. The Saratoga Spa State Park also offers a tranquil retreat. Though its outside the Finger Lakes region – located in Saratoga County near the state capital – World Atlas included the city on its list as its a great spot for retirees to stay connected.
Phelps NY
Located in Ontario County, Phelps offers small-town atmosphere with affordable housing and walkable neighborhoods and an authentic community feel. The town thrives on tradition and community, which offers retirees a slower pace without feeling disconnected. The town’s annual Sauerkraut Festival is held each August. The town was formerly a major center for the production of sauerkraut, hence the annual celebration.
Hector NY

Hector sits at the heart of the Finger Lakes wine trail – and the community is known for vineyards, rural tranquility and breathtaking landscapes. This hidden gem is perfect for retirees seeking wine-country living, natural beauty and a quiet pace of life. It is also by Finger Lakes National Forest. According to the World Atlas, Housing in Hector ranges from historic farmhouses and rustic cabins to modern lakefront homes. Retirees can choose more social neighborhoods or secluded countryside lots depending on their lifestyle.
Montour Falls NY
Montour Falls is in Schuyler County, New York
Located in Schuyler County, Montour Falls is beloved for its waterfalls, peaceful neighborhoods and charming walkability. This village is perfect for retirees who want tranquility with a view. It is also just a few miles from the ever popular Watkins Glen – and connected by the Catharine Valley Trail – a scenic biking and walking path that connects the two communities.
