Thunderstorms possible for Louisville metro Monday. Here’s when we could see them

Must read

Amid flood cleanups in Louisville following recent historic flooding, the city could see additional rainfall and thunderstorms beginning Monday afternoon.

The National Weather Service in Louisville is predicting a few strong storms to move through the metro area Monday between 3-9 p.m. While chances of flooding and tornadoes are low, the area’s main risks include gusty winds, hail and lightning.

Meteorologist Evan Webb said the highest chances for storms are mid-afternoon through Monday evening with a Level 2 risk in place for the area, but there is a chance Louisville is not impacted as the system moves south and east of the city.

“The highest chance is going to be in areas south and east of Louisville so especially the Bluegrass region, Frankfort and Lexington, southwest toward [Elizabethtown] and Bowling Green, but we’re going to see a broken line of showers and storms develop along the cold front,” Webb said. “There’s a chance that most of this misses Louisville completely but we’ll see a band of showers and storms develop … and then that band will shift southeast with time through central and eastern portions of Kentucky.”

Webb said the main threats from the system are large hail, damaging winds and possibly a brief tornado. Conditions are expected to be clear the next few days before slight chances of showers Thursday into Friday.

“Tuesday through Thursday looks fairly quiet, mainly dry with relatively normal springtime temperatures for the Louisville area,” he said.
